In the spring of 2021, we were delighted to be tasked with overseeing the salvage operation of the derelict flower mill in Ahascragh, Co. Galway with a view to repurposing some of the old industrial equipment that once formed the heart of this mill.
The Brief:
To design and create a collection of bespoke furniture and lighting that reflects the industrial heritage of the old mill for installation in the adjacent Mill Cafe.
Upon receiving a lorry load of what some might call “scrap metal”—but what we see as “vintage treasure”—we began methodically sifting through it to uncover unique and interesting pieces.
Process:
Selected historical gems were incorporated into functional furniture pieces, using a mix of materials including glass, stone, brass, copper, and 200-year-old salvaged oak. Employing time-honored techniques such as metal forging and fine carpentry, we crafted a series of vintage industrial style pieces.
The resulting furniture and lighting collection celebrates and complements the history and important role these components played in Ireland’s industrial heritage, adding a unique charm to the Mill Cafe.
