In 2022, I had the pleasure of designing and building a unique
corner unit bookcase, inspired directly by the textures and
structures of old Irish hay barns.
To capture the iconic corrugated appearance of these barns,
I manipulated Lope tubing into the desired shape. I then
hand-fabricated and folded a mild steel surround and central
shelf. To ensure the bookcase had the necessary strength and
structure, I employed the same type of lattice steelwork
used in the construction of these traditional barns.
For the finish, I used a custom-made tinted lacquer, which gave the metal components a distinctive look. One of the standout features of this bookcase is its seamless appearance, with no visible fixtures or fittings. Achieving this simple yet elegant look required a unique design approach.
The result is a functional and stylish bookcase that brings a touch of rustic Irish charm to any space, while providing sturdy and ample storage for books and decor.
