In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, I had the opportunity to design and construct a rain shelter for Blackwater Community School. The goal was to provide a safe space for pupils to stay dry while maintaining social distancing during break intervals.
The shelter was constructed using mild steel, black corrugated steel, and stainless steel mesh. A key feature of the design was the modular removable wall panels along the stainless mesh, allowing for regulated airflow throughout the structure.
We opted for a sleek, low-profile roof design paired with horizontal wall cladding. To give the shelter a unique and appealing look, we added distinctive Art Deco style details to the face of each rafter.
The result was a functional and stylish rain shelter that met the school’s needs and provided a safe, comfortable space for students during challenging times.
