I was presented with an intriguing challenge: could I re-purpose the remnants of an old bed into a functional piece of outdoor furniture? This wasn’t just any bed; it had a deep sentimental value to the clients. It had been salvaged from the old Garda barracks in Ballysaggart, Co. Waterford, and was once occupied by a beloved local character known as ‘The Shepherd,’ who had long since passed away.
Understanding the emotional connection the clients had with the bed, I aimed to create a design that honoured its history while giving it a new life. I wanted to ensure the beautifully ornate steelwork of the original bed frame remained the focal point.
To achieve this, I hand forged and bent the base, carefully restoring the bed frame to its former glory. Then, I seamlessly fused these two elements together, creating a cohesive and functional piece of garden furniture.
To finish, I painted it in ‘Orchid White enamel,’ a colour often associated with vintage David Brown tractors. This touch added a nostalgic nod to the past while making the piece stand out in its new setting.
The end result was a unique piece of outdoor furniture that beautifully blends history with functionality. The clients were thrilled to see a cherished part of their past reimagined in such a meaningful way.
